What To Expect During A Newborn Session With Me
Curious about what a newborn photo session with me looks like? Whether you’ve been following my work for a while or just discovered my page while searching for a Northern Massachusetts newborn photographer, you’re in the right place. In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly what to expect during a typical newborn photography session with me—so you can feel prepared, relaxed, and excited for your baby's first time in the spotlight.
What Happens After You Book Your Newborn Photography Session
Once your deposit is paid and your newborn session is officially booked on my calendar, you’ll receive a detailed prep guide to help you get ready for your upcoming in-home newborn photo session.
This guide covers everything—from how to prepare your home for beautiful, natural photos to tips on choosing the perfect outfits for both baby and family.
Still have questions after reading through the guide? Don’t worry—I’m always just an email away and more than happy to help with anything you need.
Then, a few days before your session, I’ll send a final confirmation email to ensure everyone is healthy and ready for a relaxed, stress-free newborn photoshoot.
What to Expect on the Day of Your In-Home Newborn Session
On the day of your in-home newborn photoshoot, I’ll arrive at your home fully prepared and ready to begin capturing beautiful memories. I’ll start by reminding you to remove anything from your pockets and wrists—like phones, hair ties, or smartwatches—so they don’t sneak into the photos.
From the start, I want you to know that your baby runs the show. If they need a feeding break, diaper change, or a moment to settle, we’ll pause—no stress at all.
We typically begin with your newborn dressed in a simple, well-fitting, solid-colored outfit. While you’re getting baby ready or finishing up a diaper change, I’ll head into the nursery to capture sweet detail shots of their first bedroom—like the crib, bookshelves, or personalized decor.
Once you're ready, we’ll take natural, relaxed portraits in the nursery. These include a variety of groupings—mom and baby, dad and baby, siblings with baby, and of course, the whole family together. We’ll use a mix of seated and standing poses, including cozy moments in the nursery chair and sweet shots in front of the crib.
If your baby is content at the end of the session, we’ll wrap up with some adorable crib shots to highlight just how tiny they are in their very first bed—always a client favorite!
Capturing More Family Moments Throughout Your Home
After we’ve finished photographing in the nursery, we’ll move into the master bedroom. I love capturing soft, natural shots of your baby alone on the bed, followed by more family portraits in a relaxed and intimate setting.
Next, we’ll explore other spaces in your home that you'd like to feature in your in-home newborn session. Whether it’s a cozy living room, a light-filled sunroom, or another favorite corner of your home, each space adds a personal touch to your newborn lifestyle photos. For my Southern New Hampshire families who are up for a little adventure, we can even head outside to the backyard—weather permitting—for some beautiful outdoor portraits.
Once we’ve wrapped up in the rooms you’ve selected, we’ll either conclude the session or move into the wrapped newborn photos portion—if you’ve chosen to include that add-on in your session.
Wrapped Newborn Photos: Capturing Sweet, Swaddled Moments
If you’ve chosen to include wrapped newborn photos in your session, this is when we’ll begin that portion of your in-home newborn photography experience. I’ll have you gently undress your baby and give them a fresh diaper change. Once they’re clean and comfortable, you’ll hand them to me, and I’ll carefully wrap them in a soft, neutral swaddle that I bring with me (rest assured, all wraps and linens are thoroughly washed between each use).
Once wrapped, I’ll safely place your baby in my Moses basket—or in your own bassinet, if you’d prefer to incorporate personal items. I’ll ask to include your hands in a few close-up photos, adding a sweet sense of scale and connection.
From there, I’ll begin slowly unwrapping your baby, allowing one tiny hand and then little feet to peek out. This gradual process keeps your baby calm and cozy while allowing me to capture all those precious details—like wrinkled toes, tiny fingers, and their peaceful expressions.
Wrapping Up Your Newborn Photography Session
As we come to the end of your in-home newborn session, I’ll always check in to make sure we’ve captured every pose or moment you had in mind. If there’s anything you were hoping for that we haven’t done yet, we’ll take a few extra minutes to get it just right.
Once everything feels complete, I’ll pack up my gear and leave you with some exciting news—you’ll receive a sneak peek of your newborn photos within 24 hours (often even the same day, depending on my schedule!). I’ll also remind you that your full gallery will be professionally edited and ready within three weeks. At that time, you’ll get to enjoy a beautiful photo slideshow before selecting your final image collection.
